Green Definitions

Green Cleaning refers to using cleaning methods with environmentally-friendly ingredients and chemicals to preserve human health and environmental quality. Green cleaning techniques and products avoid the use of chemically-reactive and toxic cleaning products which contain various toxic chemicals, some of which emit volatile organic compounds causing respiratory and dermatological problems among other adverse effects (Wikipedia).

Greenwashing is the act of misleading consumers regarding the environmental practices of a company or the environmental benefits of a product or service (TerraChoice).

Ecolabelling is a voluntary method of environmental performance certification and labeling that is practiced around the world. An "ecolabel" is a label which identifies overall environmental preference of a product or service within a specific product/service category based on life cycle considerations (Global Ecolabelling Network).

The Sins of Greenwashing
2010 - website - TerraChoice - Since the first “Sins of Greenwashing” study was published in 2007, the world has re-awakened to the issue of false and misleading environmental claims. Regulators have become re-engaged (the Canadian Competition Bureau re-published its environmental claims guidelines in 2008, and the U.S. Federal

Third-Party Certifications and Ecolabels

Recent estimates suggest that there are over 400 green certification systems and ecolabels marking consumer products in nearly every category (Bogdan 2010). For the high-volume cleaning product segment, the trend in the marketplace is to qualify these products as green if they meet one of the certifications listed below (ISSA). Design for the Environment eco label
The Design for the Environment Safer Product Labeling Program advances EPA's mission to protect human health and the environment. The program uses EPA's chemical expertise and resources to carefully evaluate products and to label only those that have met the program's highly protective standards. By allowing use of the logo on products, EPA empowers consumers and commercial purchasers to select safer chemical products that do not sacrifice quality or performance —and are safer for people and the planet.

Green Seal eco label
Green Seal is a pioneer in promoting a sustainable economy.  In 1989 there were no other environmental certification programs in the US and Green Seal founders had the foresight to recognize the need for a tool to help shoppers find truly green products. They developed the Green Seal as a non-profit to stand for absolute integrity. Over the years the reputation of the Seal brand has grown to symbolize environmental leadership, and it continues to represent unquestionably green products and services.
